Discover New Age Countryside Living in Cambourne, Cambridgeshire

What it meant to move to the country twenty years ago, isn’t what it means today. Scarce access to main roads, ageing infrastructure and few local amenities were once trade-offs you made to live somewhere surrounded by greenery, away from the bustle of the city. Today, the UK’s push for sustainability has reshaped modern rural towns. You’ll now find communities designed for contemporary living that sit comfortably within the natural landscape.

Established in the Cambridgeshire countryside in 1999, Cambourne is one such town, built from the ground up with environmental harmony in mind. The town sits alongside the A428, which links you directly by car to Eddington and Cambridge, as well as neighbouring towns such as Hardwick and St Neots. It also offers biodiverse green spaces, including meadows, woodland, nearby nature reserves and several lakes integrated seamlessly into the town, for the local community to enjoy.

Nature reserves in and around Cambourne

Cambourne Nature Reserve sits on your doorstep and is the first choice for locals seeking a weekend ramble without a long drive. Just a 12-minute walk from the centre of Cambourne, the reserve spans just over 220 acres, with a mix of grassland, woodland and wetland, as well as the Cambourne Community Orchard, which local residents planted in collaboration with The Wildlife Trust.

Several other nearby nature reserves teem with wildlife and offer quiet, tranquil spots to enjoy with friends and family, including:

  • Hardwick Wood Nature Reserve – Nine-minute drive
  • Overhall Grove Nature Reserve – Nine-minute drive
  • Hayley Wood Nature Reserve – 11-minute drive

The lakes

When Cambourne’s first wave of housing was built, developers carefully integrated the local lakes into the landscape to complement The Wildlife Trust’s existing nature reserves and green spaces. They created spaces for residents to enjoy while encouraging a diverse range of wildlife to thrive nearby.

Like Cambourne Nature Reserve, these lakes sit within easy walking distance of Cambourne town centre and provide a serene setting for dog walks or a gentle stroll if you have an hour to spare during the day.

There are four main lakes around Cambourne:

  • Lake Sirius
  • Whomping Willow Lake
  • Lake Ewart
  • Redgrave Water Lake

Local woodland and meadowland

Between Lower and Great Cambourne, you’ll find two modest, well-maintained stretches of woodland: Monkfield Wood and Oaks Wood. Both feature established walking paths, and Oaks Wood sits beside Cambourne Eco-Park, an outdoor children’s play area where younger family members can play all day.

Meanwhile, on the outskirts of Upper Cambourne, Vine Meadow, Hay Meadow and Skylark Meadow create a natural divide between the village and Bourn Airfield, while offering open green space for residents to enjoy.
