Making a new home feel personal is one of the most exciting parts of moving. Whether you're starting with a blank canvas or looking to refresh your interiors, thoughtful design choices can transform a space into somewhere that truly reflects your lifestyle and personality.
Q1. For anyone moving into a brand-new home, where should they start when thinking about interior design?
“I always say start with how you want your home to feel to then combine how you want it to look.
A new apartment is a blank canvas, which is incredibly exciting, but it can also be quite overwhelming. There are so many choices to make, and it’s easy to jump straight into pieces that don’t work with the space, colours, and accessories before thinking about the natural flow and utilising space.
At Base, we always start by understanding how you want to live in the space. Where will you relax, entertain, dine, work and store everything you need. Once we understand that, we can get the layout right and select the key furniture pieces that will make the apartment work beautifully for you.
Your sofa & bed are really the foundations of a home as these areas you naturally want most comfort with storage coming quite closely after as a priority to not make any areas feel too cluttered.
We create homes that feel right the moment you walk through the door.”
Q2. Many buyers worry that a new-build home might feel too neutral or generic. What are your favourite ways to inject personality into a space?
“I actually think a neutral new-build is the perfect starting point and very easy to change into ‘your dream’ home. You can really make it your own without having to work around lots of existing dated finishes.
It’s all about layering. A beautiful piece of artwork, a statement chair, a textured rug or some gorgeous fabrics can completely transform a room. You don't always need to make big changes, it’s the smaller details that bring the most personality.
Lighting is essential. It’s easy to underestimate just how much it can change a space. By changing a bright white bulb to a warmer tone, it creates a completely different aesthetic making a room feel much cosier & super inviting.”
Q3. What are some of the biggest mistakes people make when furnishing a new home?
“One of the biggest mistakes is buying items which are oversized which leaves very little space to move around comfortably.
It’s so important to look at the apartment as a whole and get the measurements and layout right before making those bigger decisions. You want furniture that fits the space properly, allows for easy movement and creates a lovely flow from one area to the next.
Another thing people sometimes overlook window dressings. This can make an enormous difference to how finished a home feels. You can have beautiful furniture, but without the right blinds or curtains, the room may still feel a little flat, empty or incomplete.
Ultimately, a little planning at the beginning can save time & money and means you can enjoy the process and feel confident that everything is going to work together.”
Q4. How can homeowners create a luxury feel without spending a fortune?
“For me, luxury isn't necessarily about how much you spend; it's about how you put everything together. It's the proportions, the textures, the lighting and those little details that make a space feel considered.
I'd always recommend prioritising the pieces you use every day. A comfortable sofa, a spacious bed, a well-sized rug will have far more impact than spending lots of money on accessories that don't really serve a purpose and that will just gather dust. Less is absolutely more.
A rug is a great example. Choosing one that's generously sized can instantly make a living room feel larger. Rooms also look smaller with nothing in them than when furnished. Chests as a bedside when the bed is higher is another example to elevate a space whilst having extra storage and giving that hotel luxury feel.”
Q5. What advice would you give to buyers moving into an apartment for the first time?
“Enjoy all of the benefits that apartments have to offer such as open plan living & dining, the peaceful outlooks of the balconies and generous room proportions but don't forget the vertical space. Well-planned wardrobes, taller shelving and the right window dressings can help you make the room feel grander upon walking in.
Most importantly, you don’t have to compromise on style.”
Q6. If readers attend the Interior Design Event at Kew Bridge Rise, what can they expect to learn and experience?
“We're really looking forward to helping buyers see just how much potential their new apartment has and showing them how exciting the process of furnishing it can be.
It's also a great opportunity for buyers to ask questions, talk through their own ideas and understand how the right furniture choices can make such a difference to everyday living.
We'll also be discussing the £10,000 furniture pack* incentive which includes working with an interior designer and how eligible buyers could use it to help bring their vision to life.
Ultimately, we want people to leave feeling inspired, with practical ideas they can take away and the confidence to know where to start. Furnishing a new home doesn't have to be daunting. With the right advice and support, it can be one of the most enjoyable parts of moving. Most importantly we take care of all deliveries & installations under one roof. Meaning no waiting in tirelessly for individual deliveries and then working out how to assemble and also dispose of the never-ending packaging. We take care of everything leading to a hassle-free move in and enjoying your apartment from day one.”
Q7. Furnishing a new home can sometimes feel overwhelming. How can the £10,000 furniture package incentive help buyers create a stylish, practical home more quickly and confidently?
“Moving into a new home is a joyous milestone and should be enjoyed fully without the stresses of where to start on the interiors.
For eligible buyers, the £10,000 furniture pack* incentive is a fantastic opportunity to get those foundations right from the beginning.
Working with Base Furnishings means buyers can talk through their lifestyle, their preferences and how they want each room to work. From there, we can help create a tailored scheme that brings the key furniture pieces, fabrics and window dressings together, so the apartment feels cohesive rather than a collection of separate purchases.
And it's not just about choosing the furniture. We also manage the practical side, helping to make the whole experience much more straightforward.
It's about giving buyers the guidance, choice and support to make confident decisions, while taking away some of the pressure that can come with furnishing a home.”
